The varsity girls soccer team, who is 3- 4 as of May 4th, is determined to achieve big goals this season.
The combined Dike-New Hartford and Hudson team have been collaborating as one since 2013 and have hit some difficult roadblocks along the way. Senior Hailey Elder described last year as a rebuilding season for the team.
After the loss of six talented 2016 graduates, the girls had to work together to bring Hudson/Dike New-Hartford soccer back to where it began. The veteran players have been counting on the freshmen to help turn the team’s record around.
“I am excited for the more offensively talented freshmen coming in because we are returning almost our entire defense,” said Elder. “Once we put the two together, we’re going to be
unstoppable.”
Freshman Caitlyn O’Malley, who was part of the undefeated 8th grade team that took first place at the Cedar Valley Soccer Cup last year, started the season optimistic. “ I am hoping our hard work and dedication will continue,” said O’Malley, “and I hope we can carry these accomplishments to the high school level and do our part in helping out the team.”
The freshmen, including offensive midfielder Faith Hoffman and defensive midfielder Anna Staebell, have only improved the team.
The Pirates are determined to earn the successful season that they believe they deserve. Said Elder, “Our motto this year is Earned, Not Given, and I (believe) the team will take that to heart and show it on the field.”
